Nottinghamshire Police Officer Charged with Assault and Strangulation of 16-Year-Old Girl

PC Kevin Markowski, a 46-year-old Nottinghamshire police officer, has been charged with assaulting and intentionally strangling a 16-year-old girl during her detention in a police vehicle in Arnold, Nottingham. The charges were authorized by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which began in October after a complaint was referred by Nottinghamshire Police.
The alleged incident occurred on August 24, 2022, and the charges against Markowski include assault by beating and intentional strangulation. The latter charge is contrary to section 75A(1)(a) and (5) of the Serious Crime Act 2015.
Markowski appeared at Lincoln District Magistrates Court on March 30, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of intentional strangulation but did not enter a plea to the assault allegation. He elected to have his case heard at Lincoln Crown Court, and the trial is scheduled for April 27.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that Markowski has been suspended pending the outcome of the court case. “Following an independent investigation after a voluntary referral to the IOPC, one of our officers has been charged with criminal offences,” a spokesperson said.
